HOW TO APPLY
Applying to the Master of Science in Photonics Engineering is straightforward. Whether you’re a recent graduate, a working engineer, or an international student, our admissions process is designed to help you showcase your potential.
Your path to MSPE admission
Follow these four simple steps to start your journey.
Application documents and requirements.
We welcome applicants with strong backgrounds in physics, photonics, optics, electrical engineering, mathematics, or related fields. If you’re unsure whether your degree qualifies, don’t hesitate to contact our admissions team — we’re happy to guide you.
📥 Pre-admission
All international applicants have to follow and succesfully complete the pre-admission procedure as describe below.
All applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and applicants need to follow the steps below:
Step 1 - submit your application
As well as some basic information, such as your personal details, you will need to provide some supporting documents including a CV, motivation letter and evidence of previous qualifications. Please consult the info listed below to make sure you collect and submit the correct documents.
Step 2 - wait for our review
Once submitted, our admissions team will acknowledge receipt and your file will be reviewed for completeness and eligibility. We aim to review all applications and provide a decision within 15 working days.
Step 3 - interview
If your application is succesful you will be contacted by a member of the selection committee for a technical interview to check if you have the required academic background necessary to succesfully complete our master programme.
If your applications is unsuccesful, we will still let you know and you will not be allowed to continue the application proces.
Step 4 - enrolment
If you pass the technical interview, you will be contacted by the admissions team to continue and complete the enrolment proces.
If you failed the technical interview you will not be allowed to continue the enrolment proces.

🎓 Degree requirements
BSc degree in Electrical Engineering / (Applied) (Engineering) Physics / Optics / Photonics / MathematicsÂ
Applicants with a BSc degree in related fields such as Materials Science, Mathematics and Computer Sciences will be considered as well.
Applicants holding a Belgian BSc or MSc degree in another field of Engineering or Sciences are welcome to join the programme through a personalised preparatory programme (in Dutch) at VUB or UGent.

BSc transcripts in English stating grades obtained at time of application

💬 Language requirements
Prospective students can provide proof of sufficient knowledge of English as the language of instruction by meeting one of the following criteria:
having a diploma of secondary education where English was the unique language of instruction, excluding eventual language courses
having a diploma of higher education where English was the unique language of instruction
having successfully completed secondary education organised (by an educational establishment accredited) by the Flemish, French-speaking or German-speaking Community of Belgium.
having successfully completed one of the following language proficiency tests corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference with minimum level B2:Â
TOEFL iBT (home edition) with the following minimum level: 79, with a minimum subscore of 18 in each of the 4 components;
IELTS with the following minimum level: academic module 6.5, with a minimum subscore of 6.0 in each of the 4 components;
ITACE with the following minimum level: B2 in at least 4 of the 5 components of the ITACE test;
Cambridge English Qualification with the following minimum level: B2 First (FCE) with a minimum score of 170.
Certificates and other proof of (online) language tests may not pre-date the first enrolment by more than five years.

You can finalize your enrolment (by signing your study contract) after your application has been approved.
